Facial Expressions

Now, I am going to focus on facial expressions as this is also an important part of character design as you need to understand how the anatomy of the face works to understand how to convey expressions that can be used to show the emotions of a character.

A way you could study this type of anatomy is by that searching for images online of the facial expression that you want to draw like for example if I wanted to draw a character with an angry expression, I would look up images relating to that, or you use yourself as a reference when going for facial expressions.

Expression Sheet

When designing a character an artist will usually create an expression sheet and what this will contain is all the different types of expressions that character will have such as them being happy, angry, sad etc and the reason they do this is because it allows them to be used later on in the future like for example if an artist was working for a game company on a project they would create an expression sheet of a character which could be used later on as a reference for someone creating a model of that character as they will know what their expressions should look like.

Now, here is an expression sheet that I made to show three different types of facial expressions are a neutral face, a shocked face and lastly a happy face when drawing these three expressions I tried to keep the anatomy of how the face works in mind however with the last two expressions the head shape isn’t accurate to how it would look on a real person so that something I would improve when drawing more facial expressions or designing characters.
