Anatomy for Character Designs
What is Anatomy? And why do we use it?
Anatomy is the structure of any living things you are trying to draw such as animals, humans etc and I will be mainly focusing on the anatomy of humans as I will be using it to help me design a human character and you can use images of particular parts of the body to practice anatomy so you can create a realistic-looking person and you can use anatomy to make a lot of things such as drawing particular positions or postures.
So, for example, when trying to draw a human character you would want to get images of people or part of the body that you want to focus on that you could use as a reference so you could accurately draw what they would look like in real life such as what the muscles would look like on an arm etc.
What are Gesture Drawings?
Gesture drawings are where you draw figures in particular poses and they are usually done very rough and quickly to see how fast you can capture the pose that you are going for however after getting the basic pose that you are going for down you can do go back to it to add more details to that drawing and the reason it is usually done fast is to see how the pose that they want to draw might look like without spending hours adding all of the details to it and then realizing the pose didn’t turn out the way that you wanted it to.
Gesture Drawings that I made
Now, here are some gesture drawings that I decided to draw, and I chose to draw three different poses and I did these quickly as possible to see how fast I could capture the poses that I was going for overall, I got the basic ideas of the poses that I wanted.
So, for example, in the running pose, you can tell what is happening and now that I have gotten the basic idea down I can develop it further and add more details to it and that is the idea of gesture drawings is that you draw the basic outline of the pose that you are trying to create and after you get it the way that you want it to look you add more details to it.
What are Acting Drawings
Acting drawings are where you focus on the anatomy of the character less instead you focus on getting the pose and the emotion you are trying to portray with that drawing correct before going to fix the anatomy of the drawing as you can always add the muscle placements after getting the basic idea what you trying to draw down.
Human Anatomy Practice
Now I am going to discuss a couple of drawings that I did to practice the anatomy of the human body and I chose to focus on parts of the body that I wanted to study so I could improve my skills when drawing those parts so in the future I could make the anatomy when I design a human character more realistic. The parts of the body that I chose to study were the arms and the legs as you can see with the drawings underneath overall, I am happy with how some of them turned out however I could improve the second and third arm that I drew is that the elbows don’t look that that accurate they just look like the lumps on the side of the arm so if I were to redraw these I would try to make the elbows look more natural.
