Storyboard & Lighting in The Bedroom Environment
Storyboard & Lighting in the Bedroom Environment

I drew a storyboard for the commercial I am going to create, and the reason I did this as it would allow me to plan out how I want the commercial to play out, such as what camera angles I want to use in a particular scene etc. and what transitions I might want to use between scenes.
As I mentioned earlier, the general idea would be a tv commercial for a game console like the PS1. This commercial will start in a messy teenage bedroom where they will pick up a game off the shelf, and it will show various made-up games that I will create as other environments in Unreal, which show various VFX that I have created.
Lighting

Now, I am going to look at how I have used lighting in the bedroom environment that I have created so. Firstly, for the overall environment, I wanted to make it feel like this teenager whose bedroom this is, is staying up late playing a game, so I wanted to make it feel like it’s night time so I made the scene have dark lighting such as the room mainly having dark blue colours around it to give it the appearance of night time.
However, I still need to be able to see what’s going on in this scene if I made the lighting too dark, you wouldn’t be able to tell what’s going on, and since this is going to be a commercial, that is very important.

That’s why I chose dark blue instead of it being pitch black with dark blue, and you can still make out some of the details in the environment. also, I have put other light sources in the environment, such as the tv itself, as in real life, they can generate some light from it, and I wanted to make it seem like it was glowing and lighting up the surrounding area, so I used a spotlight over the tv to accomplish this. Also, the last thing for the area that provides a major light source is the lava lamp next to the tv as it will produce some light as well but not as strong as the tv light will be.

Lastly, for lighting in this scene, I wanted to make it look like the moon is shining light on the window, and it will reflect on the room floor to provide some lighting for that area. I chose to do this because it will visually stand out and provide some lighting as well. I set up the lighting for this because I used a directional light and cut out a hole on the other side of the window so the light could get through, and then I adjusted it until it was something I liked.
